Rutherford and Oakville

rows of wine barrels in Rutherford and Oakville

Although a blink of the eye at the wrong moment while traveling on Napa Valley’s Highway 29 will result in missing Rutherford and Oakville, the influence of these tiny enclaves – or at least their names and the vineyards and wineries associated with them – is international. While the little hamlets have populations of only around 160 and 70, respectively, the names Rutherford and Oakville are indelibly etched on the palates of wine and food aficionados worldwide. Sitting about halfway between the communities of Yountville and St. Helena, Rutherford and Oakville are literally surrounded by world-class viticulture. Rutherford is also the location of renowned Auberge du Soleil, while Oakville is known for its tiny though revered Oakville Grocery.
